The Daily Bite Café

The Daily Bite Café has been around and serving the local community and workers for about 33 years, having had 2 previous owners when in July 2019 it changed hands with us, Kai & Kay, taking it over

We had lots of business ideas and renovation plans when we took over and wanted it to be the best truly Independent Café in the area.

What nobody saw around the corner was the world shutting down especially as it was just 8 months after we took over. With broken hearts and lots of tears we shut the doors on 20th March 2020.

Unfortunately for us we had, like others, to battle to keep the café open after the initial COVID pandemic hit. But with a bounce in our step, we threw many ideas around about how to restart the business when we were able in July 2020. Of course all the office workers were mainly working from home. We stayed open throughout the rest of the COVID period.

Being a small business, we furloughed our staff and bought them back slowly on re-opening and with little money coming in Kay set out visiting and talking to the very few office workers around while Kai managed the business. There was some hope though as construction sites around the area were plentiful and we came up with a range of cooked breakfasts including full English Breakfast, Vegetarian Breakfast, various breakfast sandwiches/baguettes and 4 egg omelettes to keep the café going.

This was the first time that the Daily Bite had undertaken such a thing as the lunchtime trade was its main activity. The builders’ and local support were vital for the business to survive, and the strategy worked, it pulled us through, and the breakfast trade is still going strong today.

The renovations and plans that we first thought of when taking over the café are only now, almost 3 years on, being able to be taken forward. The atmosphere at the café is very special and the renovations will only add to this whilst also making it easier to both run for the staff and to give the customers an easier access to their food especially around the busy lunchtime period.

Nothing is too much for us as we are truly passionate about customer service, always with a smile and we will not let you go hungry. Kai, who is the welcoming face of the café, is always at his best helping everyone including the unfortunate ones who are homeless and hungry. Kay helps manage the back of house with their wonderful friendly team.

The café has a homely feel with a strong return customer base, and welcomes well behaved dogs to visit Milo our own little fellow.

For those that do not know the café serves a variety of food the breakfasts we have already mentioned are served until 11am. Lunch is a choice from generously filled sandwiches/baguettes, homemade soup, jacket potatoes, paninis, salad boxes and homemade brownies & flapjacks plus a range of other small cakes and crisps. Coffee is from Brian Wogan, a local coffee roaster alongside tea, chai latte and a dirty chai latte plus a cold fridge. We also serve hot drinks with alternative non-diary products, and we cater for vegans and vegetarians. The opening hours are weekdays 7am to 3pm.

We love putting on what we consider the best food served in town, give it a try and see for yourselves.

Kai and Kay.
